Lies
By Kenneth D. Christensen
A lie is a lie, is a lie, is a
lie. With God, there is no such thing as a "little white
lie." All lies are sin, no matter what they pertain to. President
Clinton's supporters claim that there should be no consequences
for the President, since he "only" lied about sex. There
are a number of things wrong with that argument from a Christian
point of view:
- 1. The subject of a lie determines
if it is wrong. Proverbs
19:5 "A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he
that speaketh lies shall not escape." God does not make
a distinction in lies because of the topic.
- 2. There should be no consequence
for this lie. Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin
is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through
Jesus Christ our Lord." I have no way to know if President
Clinton is a saved man, one that knows for sure that he will
go to Heaven because he has trusted in the finished work of Christ,
but for liars that are not born again, the Bible lists the consequences:
Revelation 21:8 "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the
abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and
idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part
in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the
second death." (emphasis added) Seems that God must mean
all lies are sin!
- 3. Sex is unimportant.
Exodus 20:14 "Thou shalt not commit adultery." It was
important enough to God that He included it as one of the ten
commandments. President Clinton will not permit his health records
to be made public. Could it be that he is a living example of
1 Corinthians 6:18 "Flee fornication. Every sin that a man
doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication
sinneth against his own body."? Sex
is only right within marriage, it is a sacred thing. God Himself
likens it to the Love that Christ has for the church. Ephesians
5:31-33 "For this cause shall a man leave his father and
mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall
be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak
concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let
every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself;
and the wife see that she reverence her husband."
Man can claim that lies are nothing to be concerned about,
that everybody does it so it is not important. Please read the
verses that follow and consider what God thinks about it:
Exodus 20:16 "Thou shalt not bear false witness against
thy neighbour."
Deuteronomy 5:20 "Neither shalt thou bear false witness
against thy neighbour."
Proverbs 6:19 "A false witness that speaketh lies,
and he that soweth discord among brethren."
Proverbs 12:17 "He that speaketh truth showeth
forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit."
Proverbs 14:5 "A faithful witness will not lie: but a
false witness will utter lies."
Proverbs 19:5 "A false witness shall not be unpunished,
and he that speaketh lies shall not escape."
Proverbs 19:9 "A false witness shall not be unpunished,
and he that speaketh lies shall perish."
Proverbs 21:28 "A false witness shall perish: but the
man that heareth speaketh constantly."
Proverbs 25:18 "A man that beareth false witness against
his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow."
Matthew 15:19 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts,
murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:"
Romans 13:9 "For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear
false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any
other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying,
namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
